NATIONAL DAY OF MOURNING—April 28
April 28th every year marks the National Day of Mourning, paying respect to the many workers who get killed or maimed on the job every year. This was initiated in 1984 by the CLC (Canadian Labour Council). This date is now recognized throughout the world. This year April 28th was a cold and rainy day, fitting for the somberness of the occasion. Hundreds of people gathered at the memorial at Vincent Massey Park to pay homage to the thousands of workers who have died over the last 25 years. This year alone 1008 workers lost their lives while trying to make a living. Vincent Massey Park is an appropriate location for the national memorial as it marks the site of the 1966 Heron Road Bridge Disaster, in which 9 workers lost their lives and another 55 suffered injuries. CUPE 4000 was well-represented this year by our executive and entire WSIB committee. Greg Isenor, VP and Don Denneny, chair of the WSIB Committee laid the wreath on behalf of CUPE local 4000. Message from the President
November 12th, 2008 I would like to start off by thanking all the people who came to the healthcare protest in Kingston the 27th of September it was a wet but fun event. Thanks go out too Greg Isenor for booking the buses and taking care of the registrations. 4000 people showed up at the Trooper concert sponsored by CUPE and again I would like to thank all the local 4000 members who attended and also those who volunteered there time to help with this event it was a lot of fun and CUPE got a lot of good publicity out of it. The Cupe 4000 Christmas party is on November 29th with dinner starting at 6:30 pm and tickets are only 25.00 they are going fast so can them quickly if you want to go. We will be setting up on the 21st of September at lunch in front of a three cafeterias for lunch and supper and tickets will be available for the party. EORLA vote was on November 6th and OPSEU won the vote for representing the lab technologist and technicians for the labs. CUPE 4000 will be representing all the clerical staff within the labs and we are still waiting foe a Labour Board decision for the LIS clerks at the labs. The Sun Life demutualisation is moving slower than we expected and we will probably have to bring in a couple of people to come in with all there pay stubs and go over them with the Lawyer. This is going to be a long process. Diane Lacasse has resigned from her position as Recording Secretary and nominations will take place at the next General membership meeting. I would like to thank Diane for all the hard work she did with the Local. We are waiting for the translation on the index and we will send it to print hopefully we will have in a couple of weeks. In Solidarity, Bruce Waller

W.S.I.B. AND YOU
W.S.I.B. And You Currently our employer seems to be in a denial of their duty to accommodate. Under the human rights code of Canada all employers have a duty to accommodate , employees who are injured or disabled, work related or not. If this happens to you please contact the union immediately. If you are injured at work, call CUPE 4000 at (613) 722-0652 ext. 270, a W.S.I.B representative will be more than willing to help fill out the appropriate forms. The leading cause of claim denial is a lack of proper information. Remember to contact a W.S.I.B representative as soon as possible, to make sure your claim is filed correctly. CUPE Ontario convention
On May 27th, members from our executive council took the train to Toronto to assist at the 46th annual CUPE Ontario convention. For those who never attend these events, it’s like a very large general membership meeting. Locals from across the province of Ontario gathered to discuss issues and vote on resolutions submitted by other CUPE locals. Guest speakers gave speeches on solidarity, victories made though the past year and changes that need to be made. There was a lot of concern about the city workers on strike in Windsor; that has been going on for more than two months. CUPE locals 82 and 543 are fighting wage cuts due to Eddie Francis’s fixation on commercial and industrial tax cuts. It’s a sad story. People don’t have money to pay for groceries or mortgages! A resolution was passed regarding the method of payment for membership in C.U.P.E Ontario. It will cost our local more money, needless to say our representatives voted against it, to no avail. In the long run it was a great experience; but I did feel too much time was spent on guest speakers and world politics. Local and provincial issues where not addressed as thoroughly as they should have been. After all it wasn’t the United Nation’s assemble . Pascal Lavigne
