PSWs are an integral part of our healthcare team providing our patients with better care and quality of life. PSWs provide emotional, mental, and physical support, ensuring that our patients receive the very best care. We salute our healthcare sisters and brothers and wish them all the very best.

(From CUPE National website) May 12, 2025 to May 18, 2025 During National Nursing Week, CUPE celebrates the incredible work and dedication of nursing team members across Canada, including the tens of thousands of nurses represented by CUPE. This week, we pay tribute to the skill, compassion, resilience, professionalism and leadership of nurses, and we call on governments at every level to do the same, by adopting policies that respect and support nurses and all front-line health care workers. Our health care system depends on the commitment and hard work of registered practical nurses, licensed practical nurses and registered nurses. But Canada is facing a crisis in hiring and retaining nurses. To address this crisis, governments must increase staffing levels and reduce workloads. They must pay higher wages and offer the pensions and benefits nurses deserve. And they must build healthier and safer workplaces, free from violence, harassment and discrimination. Improvements are needed. But, governments must stop trying to use private options, like paying an estimated $1.5 billion to for-profit nursing agencies in 2023-2024, to solve the problems. Instead, improvements can and must be made within our public and universal health care system. With public solutions our health care system can grow to meet the needs of CUPE members, our families and our communities.  As CUPE members, we will continue to fight for better and expanded public services that meet the health care needs of the public and provide good jobs for nurses and all health care workers. We must ensure minimum standards and hours of care in long-term care facilities. We must also recognize the full scope of practice, and make sure all members of the health care team are recognized. On April 23rd, CUPE representatives circulated through our three campuses’ wards, clinics, fertility center, and ERs to pass out CUPE swag to clerks to show our appreciation for their tireless commitment to patients and their colleagues. Did you know that CUPE members came up with the idea of creating a day to recognize workers who were killed or injured at work? In the early eighties, Colin Lambert, CUPE National Health and Safety director and fellow activist Ray Sentes came up with the concept of Day of Mourning. The idea was floated and adopted by the CUPE National Health and Safety committee which declared the event would take place on May 1st , to coincide with May Day, celebrated in Europe and elsewhere. In 1984/1985 the proposal was presented to the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC). In February 1986 the CLC announce on the first day of their convention the 1st National Day of Mourning. However, rather than May 1st, the CLC chose a date which reflects the anniversary of Ontario’s first workers compensation law, passed on April 28, 1914. This year, we mourn the lost of four CUPE members who lost their life in the function of their work: ·       Micheal Adams, local 4707, Ontario ·       Dennis Lo, local 718-05, British Columbia ·       Sara Sarabosing, local 561-01, British Columbia ·       Jean-Eudes Doiron, local 1190, New Brunswick Please remember to hold a moment of silence on April 28th and pay respect to those who where injured and killed on the workplace. October 31 and November 1, 2024 brought the traveling Trojan Horse to Ottawa. They started out at Riverside, onto Mont Fort and ended the day at the Royal Ottawa. Bruyere Health, Pearly Rideau and The Queensway Carleton rounded out the second day of the tour. The purpose to this Trojan Horse Tour was to bring attention and awareness to the privatization and outsourcing of services within the health care sector in Ontario.
